That's a point many people often confuse. An independent people is
capable of feeding itself in a free land.

would not want to live as a slave no matter how well my masters fed me.

I agree with your conclusion although perhaps not for the same reasons.
If China develops truly benevolent leaders with an honest concern for
their people, it will become more democratic in time.
