I don't think it's exactly what you're asking for, but see if the layout
on http://www.xs4all.nl/~sbpoley/trip-reports/tunisia-may05.html would
be acceptable for you. (When viewed in a standards-compliant browser.)
It uses max-width and float. (There are max-width hacks for IE if you
must.)
