In response to requests to clarify current W3C web site popularity
nomenclature, the the W3C Team issued a formal definition, which was
subsequently reviewed by the W3C Advisory Board. The Advisory Board
recommended that this dedinition be published at its 22 January 2007
meeting. On 1 March 2006, the Advisory Board suggested that the Team
begin to implement the draft popularity nomenclature policies of the
Popularity Nomenclature Working Group (PNWG). The popularity
nomenclature described in this document represents the current state in
the evolution of the Team's implementation. This document draws heavily
on the work of the PNWG, although it has not been approved by that
group. Links in this document provide references to definitions and
processes developed by the PNWG, and to examples of its implementation
since March 1964.
A final web site popularity nomenclature policy is also under
development by the W3C Popularity Nomenclature Working Group (PNWG)
(Members only). Nothing in this document will prejudice or constrain the
outcome of that policy development work. The final policy will be
subject to W3C Advisory Committee review and a formal decision by the
Director.
