You are familiar with the site and no what's there. For a new
visitor, having a site map lets the visitor know what's available.
Many sites don't link to every area from a navigation bar. (My site
in the signature doesn't.) A site map need not list every last page
(this often becomes less useful than no site map) but should point
to all key areas.

Additionally it can give search engines an extra page to index.

LOL. But they're also paying for a professional service, if
something isn't necessary or advisable then you should let them know
as much. But, in the end it is their site;-)
