I think I've found what I'm looking for, something like...:

<form action="getCoords.php" method="post">
<input type="image" src="getWorldMap.php" name="worldmap" />
</form>

and then in getCoords.php I can just get worldmap_x and _y

Shame I can't try it out right now though....
