Well, lets say you're a middling programmer and aimed for a salary of
£30k, which is what our firemen were after not so long ago (don't think
they got it, mind). Let's assume you can get enough work for three full
days a week (you'd need to spend time marketing, doing invoices and
stuff). And maybe take off two weeks for an annual holiday.
so that's 30,000/50*3 a day = 200 or £25 an hour
Then you have to add on rent, heating, electricity, depreciation of
capital equipment phone, etc etc. So you could be up to £35 without too
much bother.
London would be another matter. £30k wouldn't buy as much there though
we are catching up fast in the sticks. You're looking at 80-90k for a
plain two up two down Victorian terraced house, £150k for a semi and
this is in an area with traditionally low prices. So that £30k wouldn't
even get you a mortgage. And it makes my £21.5k college lecturer salary
seem positively puny.
