preg_replace_callback() is your friend. Use preg_replace_callback().

Example:

function lowercase_callback($m) {
return strtolower($m[0]);
}

$s = preg_replace_callback('/[A-Z]+(?![A-Z\d])/', 'lowercase_callback',
$s);
