Buy "Beginning PHP, Apache, MySQL development" by Wrox, it is
outstanding. I have read most of the major ones but that one is pretty
much perfect to learn from the point of novice. Complete all the
sections and then you have enough of a basic grasp to go and learn to
do anything you want in PHP.

I also have Ullman's PHP and MySQL for dynamic web sites, which
contains stuff that is a bit more advanced, but its more boring to work
through if you are beginner so I would recommend buying that after you
have got through Wrox's, just to have handy for all the stuff it has in
the appendices (note: Wrox is the publisher's name, it was written
collaboratively).
