Out of curiousity,

While you were making changes did you bother to "fix up" any of the
existing code?

I faced the same dilema with my current client. They originally asked
that I simply add a few new features to an existing application. I
ended up convincing them that it would be easier, cheaper and faster to
just start over from scratch. Mainly because they kept mentioning that
they would need additional changes in the future as their needs
changed. I think in their case my advice to start over was sound. The
original code would have been a nightmare to work with. Especially if I
get called back a year from now to add even more functionality. I'm
very happy with the new version of the application and I think they are
as well.
