If you want to develop web applications then i would say php is a great
place to start. The learning curve is easy, it's open source and runs
on just about every platform unlike asp, you can install it for free
unlike cold fusion, it gets more popular by the day, and there's plenty
of forums where you can get quick answers to questions.
If you want to develop desktop applications then php probably isn't the
language of choice although it can be done.
If you want to do web development then i'd say there isn't a language
you can get up and running on faster with than php.
