Martin, for what its worth, I'm having exactly the same problem. I've
the same OS and PHP installation as you.
I've tried to run PHP in cgi mode - no luck.
I've followed, religiously, the installation instructions - no luck.
I've tested various possibilities - no luck.
Somewhere in the documentation there is a mention of php_SAPI.ini but
that's all there is - a mention.
I'm ready to give PHP 5 away as a very bad joke and revert back to
version 4 - at least that worked on my system.
