I do agree with you. When I first got out of school I couldn't get a
job because I had no experience, but I couldn't get any experience
without a job. So I basically told a potential employer that I was
confident in my ability to do whatever it was they wanted, to which
they again reminded me that I had no experience. So I offered to work
for free for a couple weeks. I told them that if they liked me they
could hire me and that if they didn't I would put the experience on my
resume and shop somewhere else. No risk to them whatsoever.

Needless to say, they offered me a job within a week. Just make sure
that it doesn't go open-ended for too long. You want to learn, but you
don't want to be taken advantage of, either.
