on a side note to this issue....kinda a way it all exists now...bbs'ing and
web based front end...what i'd like to see first
is something workable like this

you have your legacy bbs platform (synch/wg/wildcat whatever) assuming you
get the beast back up and setup in a manner that people who are used to web
based games etc might get on your bbs (doors/tw2002 server/majormud
whatever) and it is all tweaked via a web front end format so newbie...(ie
pre-ansi and don't know what telnet is) can hit said old time legacy bbs
stuff....via java telnet or be walked thru how to do it with hyperterminal
etc..if your lucky you might not be an amusing site
to the halo and warcraft crowd...and get some hits

i'm also assuming you have something like synchronet or worldgroup with a
web based front end that the usual ftp/email/or such can be setup to
correspond with your newly revitilized old 1998 setup..you got the legend of
green dragon web based sever up...majormud up...tw2002 server up..space
quest 2112 up..etc and all avail via a modest and simple (for people
unfamilar with bbs'ing )java telnet to pop in/out from main page...ie in my
case even to the point you could telnet into a 1986 ap2 computer bbs setups
for hoots

now ...i've seen a lot of systems that have most or some or all of the above
....and again i might not know what i'm talking about...but they don't seem
to get the kind of action that bbs's of old had

ok...now say you have the above..old legacy stuff cranking out ....a nice
web based front end...a newbie web user who knows nothing about telnet can
hit a link...telenet into majormud/ a lord or lunatix door or whatever
from the page and back out
w/o knowing too much about how it works ....

and you do as this thread is talking about .... you get the php and bulletin
board and fido stuff moving in the manner of hubs
etc as discussed on this thread..to add further depth and community feeling

pretty good....BUT....

(and hopefully i'm wrong on this....and people can point me to the
links...ie promised land of my mistakes so i can get motivated to do the
above i've talked about)

where are the WEB based games/services/etc that are exciting enough (not
talking about tic tac toe web based or even nont avail for others..lunatix
online web based) but some freeware/affordable web based RPG game or
whatever ...like T4c (if people remember that) that...... a puny wanna be
bbs sysop with little cash could toss up on his web based setup as a game or
hook to draw the masses?...but alas it is a $5k cost and $1.5k per year lic
fee and guite frankly i figured people would have stuff like that by now
acting as www based doors (it is from like 1987 and graphically looks
it)...would serve my purposes in this rant but jeez......the
money....zowie....or say lunatix online sold their pkg to license to people
to use like the old doors versions that they used to and were distributed
....and i could put bbs sorta kinda web based stuff up on the front end of my
site for the visually motivated types (ie won't do ansi) to go to and be on
my site...say the legend of green dragon web based game....the web based
lord version....

anyway ....my rambling point is....something as a front web end that would
get people to my web site to make my web site more in the version of the
bbs's of old...ie...the thread here on the hub arrangement and php and bbs
stuff is a part of that..but....what do we do for eye candy

once people say hit on my site...and play say legend of green dragon and or
(not gonna happen cause don't sell licenses) but say a lunatix online type
game a person could run...then hey...nice site....whats this majormud link?
whats this ap2 from 1983 link? what the heck is tw2002 ..they stuck around
your site long enough from the web based games hopefully of some note..to
check out and dig down to some of the other depth of the site

then the old bbs stuff would make a come back and would add some DEPTH to a
web site with hooks to wean them into
some stuff they may or may not have ever seen before ...ie....tw2002 or
something else...discussion areas networked door games like SRE etc etc....

hopefully this rant makes some kinda sense..but i've heard from a lot of
people running sites with a modest or freeware MUD front end....people hit
on the site..oh ..its just another MUD..or it is a legend of green dragon
site...or you get the drift..poof...nothing to stay here for..move on....

looking for more like the thread here.how to make it more .then just a 1
trick pony kinda solution....

now hopefully someone comes back and tells me i'm full of it...and points me
to sites where this is done ...but i'm talking affordable...sure a site like
www.realmud.com has a t4c game the fourth coming ($5k or something $1.5k a
yr license?) and majormud (i got it but you don't wanna buy it today...ouch)
and an ISP service etc..but most new users i know think T4c is too lame for
graphics....etc...and i don't run an ISP and can do this for a hobby....and
1997 or some such T4c for that kinda cash..jeez

anyway.....thats my rant from an old gamer bbs point of view...i ask around
my area for people running a decent game server i could add my legacy stuff
to..maybe help foot the bill... (top of page) and they kinda look at me like
what is a game server..someone like us could run...ie what is a bbs? .the
head tech of a local ISP never knew telnet could be in color...

that is not such a big issue...as said before you can make links off the www
page to javatelnet in/out this legacy stuff and other tricks....but just
discussion boards or links to old legacy games...or as the thread here is
trying to do...fido hub arrangements of note with other systems alone...in
my meager view is not enough carry the load of bbs type interaction needed

but where is seth able and the next version of LORD or the equiv ..to shake
up such a universe of static www pages....i know people used to talk about
tw2002 as a web page game (was it twiglight 2000?) but an't like i know
about them allowing other sites to use it like door games for a fee...they
usually lock it up...as specific to their site and as far as
MUDS....maybe..but as an example there is a site called
http://www.virtualapple.org/ that allows you to run old ap2 games (orig
disks) via activeX etc...stuff like Taipan...hard hac mac....wizardry ..zork
etc....i'd prob get more action from some setup like that then just doing
another mud...be more fun to just hit on something like this and play
Tetris.....

but i mean really i expected some modest purchaseable game for bbs types in
the manner of T4c graphics at least by the
year 2006?

anyway.. ..end of my rant....good thread thou on the non- game stuff fido
etc/hub discussion..here....but my game bent used to be from the other
direction ..ie bbs gaming site....the file xfer/chat/ msg posting/ap2
areas/...all came after the fact it was the lord game door with 100 igms or
the tw2002 or majormud..that got them to check us out...the eye candy and
such got them in the door...if i was a very rich man i'd put up the t4c
stuff (lame as it might be...still better then some web based stuff i could
find) or lunatix online if it was available to license....but maybe that
boat has sailed.....(or sunk)

anyway....hopefully you all will point me to the areas above i'm ranting
about...on the web someplace...and i'm just so far out of it..i don't know
anymore...knock wood
