I thought I did Mitch, sorry. With my install of mod_php4, php4 and
php5 I get the error 1 message and a description like, Apache sharing
the same directories than the install would stop and go to the prompt.

I did a "make deinstall" each time for the ports I was trying to
install and then I tried something else. So far no luck with php. I do
have Apache running and it seems to be working fine.

When I apply these ports should Apache be stopped for the process?
