OK - thanks. I had a reply from the support techs. They say: "Your site
is hosted on a shared hosting cluster and cron jobs are not available.
In order to use cron jobs, you will need to purchase a
managed/dedicated server package."

So - for the moment I think I'll leave it the way I've done it: While
the PHP script is working nothing appears to happen for between 5 and
15 seconds - but I guess I'll have to live with that.

I've even tried to make the PHP script output a "working..." type image
to the screen so the user can see something is happening, but this
always displays right at the end of the process, (once all files have
been created), and not at the beginning...

Anyhow - as always, thanks for your advice.
