Most want work experience. Either by paid employment or multiple consulting
contracts. The former is preferred - as a long time consultant I would have a
lot of trouble getting a paid job if I wanted one. Most employers don't
consider consulting to be a "real job" :-).
Training will help also - especially if it's a well-established program with a
good reputation. Then they know you've picked up good programming habits.
One problem with self taught include not knowing exactly what you learned and
where the holes might be. Another is they don't whether you've picked up good
programming habits or not.
If you have at least 2-3 years of programming experience they figure you've
learned something, at least :-).
