To use
<td><img src = "mypic.gif"></td>
instead of
<td>
<img src = "mypic.gif">
</td>
solves the problem.

However, I prefer
<img src="mypic.gif" alt="" style="display:block;">

The inline style
style="display:block;"
also solves my spacing problems I had with HREFs.
