Being a consultant isn't the easiest thing in the world - but it can
also be a rewarding career. Working for yourself has entirely different
challenges and rewards.
If you just want to program, then I suggest you plan on spending 3 hours
a day on the road (unless you can find something closer). You probably
can find someone to carpool to make it easier.
But if you want to strike out on your own, figure you're going to have
to learn an entirely new set of skills, including basic marketing,
accounting and so on. Figure that once you get your business running
(and it will take time), you'll probably spend about 25-30 hours per
week programming and 20-25 hours per week on other things.
And yes, I know that ads up to more than 40 hours a week. But you'll
need to be doing 50 hours/week or more to build your business and keep
it running.
