Typically, to set this up on you machine you will need Apache. It does
not matter on what OS you are running. This will be the front door for
any one accessing you machine ala port 80. Naturally you will have to
make the changes in the Apache 'http.config' to allow the use of php for
people access your port 80. Make sure that your ISP lets you run a
server from your machine. Not sure if you have a Domain name or more
than likely you have a dynamic IP address. You can get around that
problem, of a dynamic address, by say get a free domain name from, in my
case, http://www.no-ip.com

In my case I was not allowed to do it. They typically want you to user
their servers at a price.

I happen to have installed all of the pieces independently because I was
running Tomcat as my Jsp\Servlet container before getting into php..

There are a few distributions out there that will install all you need
to do what you want. The one that I hear most here in the php groups is
XAMPP. It will install Apache, MySQL and Perl. Not sure if you will be
using Perl.

To give you some ground to start you may want to look at the following
link just for info. This would be if you want to install and configure
your own installation.
