One page I made with internal links had a list of contents of
abstracts of various papers that were to be read to a conference.
These were short paras summarizing the papers. There were a lot
of them and it would have been messy to have them anywhere except
on one long page. The contents directory (with even briefer info
such as subject and author) at top served a couple of functions,
one of which was to allow folk to go directly to anything that
might have interested them rather than scrolling and browsing and
the other (one of the few cases I needed different visited link
colours) to act as a guide to what they might have checked out.
