Wild shot in the dark here, but try:
die(zlib_get_coding_type());
Mine gave me a result of "gzip", *ONLY* after I enabled zlib.output_compression in my PHP
INI file.
Maybe, there are two different compression methods and one of them fails? Or perhaps two
different versions and the script you are using is not compatible with it.
For example, I could not get your script to run *at all*. I kept having to fix code that
depended on a specific type of Apache configuration and finally got to a point I did not
know what to fix.
Can you run the minimal script in the PHP manual under "Zlib Compression Functions"? It
ran fine for me.
Let us keep on trucking, I would love to know why this is not working for you.
