Well, I'm just assuming that it's malformed since you're cutting off the end
of the file at an arbitrary point. Although you're probably not doing much
more damage than leaving half of a frame off, the end of the file chunk may
give Firefox some grief just the same.
To test this theory, download your partial MP3 with e.g. Internet Explorer,
save it to your computer, and open the file with Firefox. If it plays fine,
then your problem lies in the MIME type or something else about how the data
is delivered to the browser. If it only plays for one second, as before,
then your problem could be the MP3 file.
