Well since you are using client-side I would expect you would run a
validation onsubmit for the form! Also regardless of what you do
client-side the receiving server-side should also validate (an possibly
reformat the string as well) You should not be relying on JavaScript
here, it can and will be disabled for some of your visitors. Use
JavaScript to augment only

Even more reason not to do it on the keypress.
