First of all, thanks for your reply.

I use Oracle 9.2
The column data type is varchar2, but only because I read that oci8 does not
support clob-nclob
The limitation of 4000 is very strictly for my usage.

U can save me :)
In my field I will insert-select a text in various languages and so my page
encoding is UTF-8

In the column the data are saved correctly, but when I run the php page I
view only these chars: ???? (also without using PEAR)
