You can do it by a negative lookbehind assertion:
'/(?<!_thumb)\.(jpg|jpeg|gif|png|bmp)$/'
finds an instance of .jpg etc that is not preceded by _thumb
(You want to escape the . anyway, as otherwise it will match any character.)
