i NEVER said that. you can 'what if' that one all you like...it has NOTHING
to do with THIS specific question/problem. what i did say is that PRODUCT
ID's are RARELY INTEGERS so you bringing up the whole "you're stupid if you
take ID from user input" is not only insulting, but moronic. it also has
nothing to do with the problem at hand. your steps in that direction only
take the op further from understanding what a correct answer should look
like. it is a mute point.

toyota, nabisco, burlington northern, fischer-price, the military...all have
products who have ids both internal and external. NONE OF WHICH ARE
INTEGERS. again, i am speaking from experience. i have done work FOR ALL OF
THEM. their product id's look more like a car's license plate...a
combination of letters and numbers.
why not allow db to set id automatically? BECAUSE THEY RARELY ARE INTEGERS.
even if you do put an autoincrementing id on a product table, you will
necessarily be using the PRODUCT ID of the manufacturer to lookup and
display/edit data related to it.
but again, this issue DOES NOT RELATE IN THE SLIGHTEST to the op's
problem/question.

i realize my oppinion is my own. what you fail to recognize it that it
