You really need to sit down and do some brainstorming. If you're
starting your company with a couple of friends, arrange a get-together
at a cafΓ© or at home (depending on where you feel more comfortable).

To start with, find out what you're going to offer. Don't go in the
direction of "designing websites sounds like something cool" or
"anything". Be more specific about what directions you're going to
take, and don't go down roads you've only heard about (ie. don't start
a web design company when you barely know what Photoshop is). What are
your skills? What can you offer that (most) companies can't? Any good
company starts out with one or more good (and marketable) ideas. Not
only do you need to be good at what you do, but you'll also have to
offer something that people will be willing to pay for. In this
brainstorming section, you'll also need to find your target market (WHO
will need and be willing to pay for your products/services?).

Only NOW is the time to brainstorm around a business name. Ideally,
your business name will have to be memorable, not already in use by
another business, and not be something that can offend your target
market ("Dumb Engineers, Inc" or "Asshat Ltd" will in any case be poor
choices for a name). You'd also want a name that is suitable for the
market you're entering. If you're actually going into designing
websites, the names "Paperboys LLC" or "GoodCarpentry Inc" will
probably discourage your potential customers, thinking that you're
doing something entirely different than what you're actually offering.
Write down a list of about 10 to 20 names you'd be willing to go with
(you need to have some backup choices in case one doesn't feel too
comfortable at some later point).

If you have trouble finding a suitable name, you might want to use one
of these tools:
http://www.google.com/search?q=business+name+suggestion
http://domain-suggestions.domaintools.com/

If you want to make sure you're not barking up someone else's tree, use
the major search engines (Google, MSN, Yahoo, etc) to search for each
of those names on your list. Why do this? Simply because the names that
yield the fewest search results (preferrably none) are more likely to
land you the .com domain name for it. And if I were you, I'd register
the .com domain name already at this point, just so you won't regret
not doing it at a later point (meaning, if someone has snatched it
right in front of you).

I went through this process myself when selecting both my business name
and my Internet nickname to make sure I'd have something unique. I also
go through a similar process when selecting a product name I'm about to
develop.

Please note that this is my way of doing it, and it's a method I feel
comfortable with. You might feel comfortable with a different method.

In any case, your first question shouldn't be "I want to start a
company, what's a good name?", at least not to the general public. A
business name usually reflects some personal feelings about the company
from its owner(s), meaning that you basically have to figure it out on
your own.
