did you install php/mysql as an RPM or from source? what OS are you using?
if you did the RPM (assuming redhat linux), do a rpm -qa | grep 'php' (or
maybe just php without the '')
tell me/the list what it says..

I hadn't thought of running it from the command-line as a test.
