Curly braces should work. Tried & tested: 
<?php 
$bar =3D 'bar'; 
$foo[$bar] =3D 'baz'; 
$foz['baz'] =3D 'success'; 
echo "{$foz[$foo[$bar]]}"; 
?> 
 
So use print "<a name=3D'$ct[$k]'>{$continentname[$ct[$k]]}</a>\n";
