Andy's code was a good sketch, but it does not address your initial question
about _maintaining_ the aspect ration in _scaling_ when the window is
resized. And there is no way to do that. But if you are happy with the
solution, then your problem was different from what you described.

Well, Andy is using cellspacing="1". Can you guess how to modify it to
remove the spacing between cells? There's also a CSS way to do that:
table.chessboard { border-collapse: collapse; }
