To do things like what Google does, you will need to know databases,
xml, Javascript, Javascript + XML (AJAX) and Python. And then you will
need to know how to make them all work together, and how to create
n-tier web apps for scalability. Expect to take a year or two to learn
all the fundamentals.
Here is a good example of what methods Google *might* be using behind
the scenes:

However, if you are just starting out with creating web apps, you should
probably look into Ruby. It is easy to learn, fast to create products
with, and is great for rapid app development.
