Not on setting up IIS specifically it was just a question to see if anyone
else had ran into such a problem when setting up IIS. I had googled quite
a bit on mysql not connecting with IIS and couldn't find anything specific.

thanks all for the replies though..

I think what it was, was their version of mysql was 4.1 and according to
php.net you have to use mysqli for that, but luckily they were happy to
downgrade to an earlier version of mysql, and PHP seems to be talking to
the database now.

But now it seems to be dropping sessions and $_SESSION variables don't
work. Sigh :)
