Yes, but saying that doesn't make it true :) HTML was never *supposed*
to be used for presentation, but it was/is, so the argument is moot.
People STILL use tables for layout... why? Because for all the niceness
of CSS there are to many cross browser issues. So IRL people regularly
use HTML for layout. There's nothing wrong with this. Guidelines are
supposed to guide, they're not supposed to be followed blindly.

I agree completely. It's all about the content. From time to time the
content IS the brand (there isn't much beyond the brand itself). I get
annoye when people generalize about design; all Flash is not bad. HTML
for layout does work. CSS will not save us all :) Good design and good
content presentation can be done with whatever technology is at hand,
and people (designers) should not get so hung up on what is "proper" or
"standard". Who cares if the end product is a success with your target
audience? If it gets the message across, it has done it's job!

yes, but the same applies to whatever audience you are looking at. The
world is VERY VERY big. There are over 300,000,000 active WWW users.
Trying to design a web site that suite all is just... not smart. It
can't possibly ever work; too many browsers, too many cultural gaps, too
many languages. In the far east all of the popular sites seem to be
coming Flash heavy, interactive, with sound and video. It will happen in
the West too. This doesn't mean the content is harder to get to; it
means that there are new ways of presenting the content that may have
better success with the audience.
Also, I don't think web "sites" (web experiences?) should be a
single-stream thing. All of our projects, for example, provide most of
the text content as RSS feeds. So folks can subscribe, and read, over
whatever RSS/XML reader they prefer. They don't HAVE to have Flash, but
most of the content is very visual.
