Well you can't play MPEG movies, or AVI's, or WMVs without the correct
player either... open source or otherwise, you need the a player of
some sort to view them. Jpeg requires something that can display
jpegs. Flash Video (FLV) is no different. Also Flash Video can be
encoded without paying a penny to Adobe. There are actually several
open source FLV players (google it), so just download one. The same
way you'd download the DIVX codec to watch the vast majority of
downloadable (non-streamed) videos, which are DIVX encoded. BTW, I'm
pretty sure DIVX is not open source.
The only thing that is not open is Adobe's own Flash Player, but
that's no big deal.
