don't get so down on yourself. you go down on everyone else quite enough.

sure it does. if your peak time of use is during the day one second and you
get all of your hits in that one second, that's 16,667 hits peak/day. you
base your server software and hardware purchases off of those estimations.
since you've no idea wtf you're talking about, you have some idea in your
head that 500K hits per month is some astronomical number. statistical
analysis says that your hits per second is rarely going to be above 20
during peak per day where that peak time is an eight hour stint - people
using the site either during or after work, to generate your peak. anything
that is not 'peak' just serves to lower your avg. hits per second (so you
needn't argue that).

the worst case scenario is having ALL traffic for the day happen at the same
time. that's 16,667 hits. i serve those numbers up all fucking day long! my
windows xp desktop handles that just fine too. i've had those numbers on
linux servers with 32MB of ram running on 486 100mhz...just fucking fine.

hint, do your math before assuming 'x' is some outrageous number.
