Sorry to answer my own post but in case anybody else wants an answer:
(a) Pear happily sits and works under C:\Program Files\nusphere\phped\php5
(b) There should only be one PEAR directory, I synched them all upwards so
as not to lose anything then deleted the sub directories as I went. No
idea what caused this but it's fixed now.
