How stupid could I get. The missing "close comment" was the problem.
I tried the array but it seems the:
if (array_key_exists($etype, $aMailTo)) {
$mailTo = $aMailTo[$etype];
$errmsg .= "$etype"; }
....didn't work but:
$mailTo = $aMailTo[$etype];
....did. Go figure.
