Not that its any help to your immediate problem but I use
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdf-php and can heartily recommend
it. Documentation is fairly good and plenty of examples with the code
in the download from sourceforge.
It is not loaded as a module so you only need to upload the code and
modify a config file IIRC.
