You need to spend money marketing your website to get people to it, and
get good search engine rankings for the sorts of keywords that are in
your listings. Then you need to find ways to get your visitors coming
back and make it so good that they'll tell their friends. This is very
difficult initially because you won't have any listings so how to get
people coming back again? Very chicken and egg senario.
Too many people think they have a great idea for a website and set it up
and are disappointed with the result. I am doing a lot of working for
someone who has a classifieds and business directory site at the moment
and he's been working on it for about 10 months now. We tweak and
modify it a lot and he's spending a lot of money marketing it, and
buying business lists and employing telemarketers to get people into
the business directory. Slowly but surely it's gaining visitors and is
starting to make him money only now.
