But it *does* stuff up the design, because you choose to make the font
smaller than my default size - which is "100%".

A PC using Windows 2000, which does not have Verdana installed.
Some other suggestions: don't use class names like "left-purple"
because you may want to change that color later (someone doesn't like
purple) so your name <div class="left-purple"> becomes silly if the
color is actually green. Call it something meaningful such as
"navhighlight".
According to the standards, wherever you set a foreground color, you
also need to set a background color, even if it is transparent. See:
