I want to know how to reduce a number in a form.

I have a form with fields that populate a table in a sql database. I run
courses and people nominate their attendance by completing the form. I want
to be able to have a place on the form saying 'Places available in this
course are 'x''. Hence if I have 25 places and someone nominates a course
the next person who accesses the form sees 24 places available and so forth.

How can I do this.
