I thought the HSQLB (Open Office right?) database files where stored in
XML format. If this is the case then you should be getting to grips
with that -- I think PHP XML support is rather weak and a bit to
complex, and would not really consider using hsqldb files if you are
planning on a large database, or one that will be frequently updated.

As its file-based writes needing to take place at the same time will
either fail or you will have to queue them up somehow. Its like the
Access MDB format but somehow weaker in that at least the MDB would
allow simultanius if limited usage.
