So smarty is not worried about what the name looks like - as long as
I can concoct something that's unique to that template and preferably
filename-friendly, smarty will generate local cache files using it.

ok, that wasn't clear before.

Without a doubt - I'd always thought my existing approach was a bit
crap - it does work though ;^)
