Its easy in your special case. Just count the entries with newer or older dates and you
know the position.
for older:
SELECT count(*) FROM table WHERE date<(SELECT date FROM table WHERE name="someone")
for newer:
SELECT count(*) FROM table WHERE date>(SELECT date FROM table WHERE name="someone")
