site layout, back next question

Problem:
How would one go about creating a dynamic listing so that the source
of all pages in the dir don't need to be edited (by hand or by script)
and will dynamically figure out what Back and Next would be if we were
to add a file to this sample list.

History:
I have been searching for a way to create Back & Next links for a
bunch of pages[0] and have found some good ones if you assume that all
the pages will be numbered[1] in some way. However I keep adding to
files to these directories and want to use asciibetical, based on
filename, and not numeric sorting.

Right now I am using hard coded links that are created by a bash
script and I want to dump this because any time I add one file to the
directory I have to upload the contents of the whole thing for an
update.
