I'm not sure about other countries but in the UK we have the Data
Protection Act which states that information must be 'adequate, relevant
and not excessive'.
Asking about marital status where there was no relevance would clearly
fall foul of the law.
IANAL etc etc.
However, in relation to the original point I took it to mean that asking
about marital status was taboo in all situations. Whereas one must be
careful that it is not misconstrued as a pick up line, I don't think
this is general case.
