I have given up on a lot of *serious* sci-fi and just read a lot of
the space operas/space military. High noon in space crap. Much more
entertaining.
Have not been able to find much of interest to read so I went out and
found some old James Crumley mystery/PI books. His book "The Mexican
Tree Duck" is one of my all time favs. Starts out by the *hero*
pushing juke box onto the railroad tracks because they took a Hank
Snow song off, all while drinking Tequila and snorting meth. Now that
is a book that starts out well. Another one no one seems to know is
Joe R. Lansdale, basically same type writer.
