Considering that the screen was already little I do not think that was worth
to make the window narrower..

I have not tested in Opera.
But if the problem is the same as the one which I see browsing at IE, I
think that it is not much worth attention.

It is more flexible but the page is longer.
The text seems to be below the pictures
(at least the first).
Basically, a table can already be defined as such containing only 2 columns
whereas one gives information which are connected with the data ( pictures
in this case) contained in the first one. Therefore it is only a design
problem.
Having said that, I doubt whether the other example looks better, because I
see a stronger visual connection between the pictures and the information on
the right column (at least while browsing the page by a normal window size)
on my page.
