1. You can know how the game works and follow what Els is
saying.
2. You can know how the game works and not follow what Els is
saying.
3. You can not know how the game works and not follow what Els
is saying.
but your use of the word "so" when you say "I do not know how
the game works, so I cannot understand what you are talking
about", suggests you are missing the following possibility:
