It is a way to check that you are using HTML and CSS "standards"
You don't "NEED" it. It is a nice to have, but there is no requirement
to have it. Your website and be non valid and still work perfectly
fine in all browsers. Some people are a little anal about it. Most
(personal observation) seem to use it as a tool not a goal. It may
help you when things are not displaying as you would like them to.
